Marathon effort for Salisbury runners


FIVE members of the Salisbury Athletics and Running Club travelled to the Big Apple to take part in this year’s New York Marathon, raising more than £10,000 for charity.

GP Fiona Ross Russell, who works at the Avon valley practice based in Upavon and Durrington, was raising money for Breast Cancer, and her time of 3hrs 15min made her the 175th lady past the winning line and 4th out of 1274 in her age group, in a field of 44,000 runners.

Her husband, Tom Peters, was competing in first marathon raising money for the Alzheimer’s society, and ran it in 4hrs 10min.

Clive Smith, who works at Salisbury Glass was raising money for Salisbury Hospice and recorded a time of 3hrs 13min, while wine merchant Kent Barker competed in his 10th marathon, recording a personal best of 3hrs 12min.

John Peters was competing in his third and final marathon, having already run London twice, his charity was Cancer Research UK, and completed the course in 4hrs 18min.

He said: “The whole experience was overwhelming, the thrill of the run was great but this was the toughest challenge ever both physically and mentally.”
