WALKERS can now sign up to join us in this year’s Salisbury Hospice and Salisbury Journal Midnight Walk to help raise much needed funds for a local facility that means so much to so many.
Last year’s inaugural event proved to be a huge success, with more than 500 people taking part and raising more than £50,000.
John Lakeman, fundraising co-ordinator for Salisbury Hospicecare Trust, said: “We were very pleased with last year’s event and we hope to do even better this year.
“I really don’t think the weather could have been worse but everyone was in great spirits.”
The hospice has been providing care for people with terminal illnesses and their families for more than 20 years.
There is a volunteer team of more than 100 local people who support the work of the professional medical staff in a variety of ways – reception, driving, gardening and patient support.
Salisbury Hospicecare Trust, the charity that supports and organises fundraising for the hospice, is committed to raising £1million each year to maintain and develop the services it offers.
The Journal is committed to supporting the work of the trust and is asking readers to come forward and help, while getting the chance to enjoy the atmosphere of the event.
Journal editor and publisher Bill Browne said: “I am delighted with the Salisbury Journal's part in establishing the Midnight Walk as a major fundraiser for Salisbury Hospice. It was a new adventure last year and the weather was certainly not kind to us.
“However, it is not the rain that's etched most in my memory of completing the walk. It is more the cheerfulness, effort and camaraderie that went with all those who took part. I remember one woman remarking that it was easy to put up with the downpour for one night when you thought about those the event was benefiting.
“I can guarantee that entrants to this year's Midnight Walk will have the opportunity of enjoying the same satisfaction that I did. It is one of personal achievement and the knowledge that you are making a difference to the quality of life of people who are at their most vulnerable."
The 13-mile sponsored walk starts at midnight on June 5 at the Five Rivers Leisure Centre, taking in Ashley Road, Devizes Road, Queen Alexandra Road, Wilton Road, Churchfields Road, Town Path, Middle Street, Netherhampton Road and Odstock Road to the hospice – and then back again.
Registration costs £15. To register call 01722 416353, visit www.salisburyhospicecare.co.uk/midnightwalk or pick up a form at the Journal office at Rollestone Street.
