New crossing in the pipeline for Porton Road
3:32pm Tuesday 18th September 2012 in News By Jill Harding
AMESBURY councillors have welcomed the news that a long-awaited road crossing could be built in the town.
Discount retailer Home Bargains says it will pay for the crossing in Porton Road if it gets planning permission to construct a 700,000 sq ft distribution hub at Solstice Park.
Residents say that in recent years traffic on Porton Road has increased considerably, and it is now difficult and dangerous to cross.
However, traffic surveys carried out for Wiltshire Council showed that although the road was busy, not enough cars were speeding on it to make it a priority for a crossing.
Home Bargains is poised to put in a planning application to Wiltshire Council for its £70million southern distribution centre, which it say will bring 1,200 jobs to Amesbury.
The company says it will abide by the existing planning conditions on the site, including the crossing in Porton Road.
