SALISBURY’S third illuminated carnival takes place next Friday, and the event promises to be bigger and brighter than ever.

Getting the carnival underway will be a performance by Gugge 2000, a 40-strong band of musicians playing Guggenmusik – which translates as Happy Music – in the Market Place at 7pm.

The floats will process along Castle Street, New Canal and Fisherton Street from 7.30pm.

Taking part will be a host of colourful illuminated floats, walking entries and steam engines.

Civic and community events officer at Salisbury City Council Abigail Bruford said: “I’m delighted with the mix of entries at this year’s carnival, with many new entries taking part.

“It promises to be a very colourful and very musical carnival with more bands, which is great because that’s what the public asked for. A highlight for me will be the Swiss carnival band, Harlekinos, towards the end of the procession.” From 4pm next Friday, the Guildhall Square will be packed with fairground rides, vintage vehicles and a display promoting the history of illuminated carnivals.

Pubs and restaurants will be offering a range of carnival discounts for the evening.

Motorists are being warned that Central Car Park will be extremely busy and only accessible from the A36, but all other council car parks, including Culver Street, will be open and free of charge from 6pm. City centre roads on the carnival route will be closed, and there will be changes to the SalisburyReds bus services.
