Event celebrating young people's projects

YOUNG people from across the county will be attending an event celebrating achievements over the past year.

More than 500 guests, including those involved in The Lounge project, which created an area especially for young people within Salisbury Library, will be at WYPOF on Ice tonight.

The event, being held at Club Ice in Westbury, is a celebration of all the projects which have been funded by the Wiltshire Young People's Opportunity Fund (WYPOF) over the last year.

WYPOF funding has been provided by the Government's Department for Children, Schools and Families and has been administered in Wiltshire by young people and Wiltshire County Council.

In the past year in excess of £215,000 has been given to various projects and events for young people, with an additional £180,000 being granted to capital works for young people.

Every WYPOF application has to be written by young people and all the applications are assessed by a panel of trained young people from Wiltshire Assembly of Youth.

At the ceremony eight of the most outstanding projects supported by funding from the WYPOF will use a range of presentations such as film and drama to show how their projects helped young people.

David Whewell, head of Wiltshire County Council's youth development service, said: "Young people have consistently proven they are able to develop new and interesting programmes and projects for themselves and their peers. There are more things to do and places for young people to go in Wiltshire due to WYPOF funding and young people's efforts."
