A HAPPY new year to all my constituents. I hope Christmas passed peacefully.

I spent much of the holiday in a turkey-induced torpor.

However, I am now back to work getting on with casework and setting out the parameters for my new job – the Prime Minister has asked me to become his special adviser on the issue of online child protection with responsibility for implementing new safety filters on the internet, which I am very pleased to do as I am passionately committed to keeping our children safe online.

It is a part-time role, meaning I can continue my work supporting the Secretary of State for Defence as well as giving you the service you expect from your MP. I know I will hear from you if standards slip!

It wouldn’t be January without some new year’s resolutions so here is my list: First, I am not going to let the issue of possible reductions in local train services to Pewsey and Great Bedwyn rest.

We will have the results of a study reviewing electrification as far as Westbury in February but we need to keep making our concerns about reduced connectivity known to ministers and franchise bidders alike in the meantime.

Secondly, I will keep focusing on local health services, including delivering a primary care centre in Devizes and better minor injuries services in the north of my constituency and better ambulance response times for Tidworth and Ludgershall.

And, lastly, I am going to do what I can to help our excellent Conservative Wiltshire councillors get re-elected this summer. We are fortunate to have a well-managed, financially responsible council that has cut costs, reinvested to maintain or improve front line services and frozen our council taxes at the same time and, as a Wiltshire resident, I want more of the same for the next four years.
