THIS month we launched the final report of our cross-party Independent Parliamentary Inquiry into online child protection.

I had set up the inquiry team last year and, after much evidence gathering, we concluded that children are easily seeing adult content on the internet; it is associated with a number of disturbing trends and more than four out of five adults are extremely worried about the problem.

Parents are finding it hard to keep their children safe online as the world of technology changes and the number of web-enabled devices explodes.

The internet is currently treated very differently from other forms of media where we have TV watersheds, film ratings and adult content bars on mobile phones and our team felt it would be more sensible if internet service providers (ISPs) changed the system so that, instead of placing all the responsibility on parents to filter pornography out of the home, customers “opted-in” if they wanted access to pornography and other adult sites.

We have called for a formal review of this new approach and made a series of other recommendations, all of which can be found on my website at claireperry.org.uk Also on my website is a summary of conclusions from the open meetings I held during the Easter recess when many constituents came to hear our panel of local healthcare experts discuss how local health services will change and evolve going forward.

Sadly, some healthcare issues of my own prevented me from attending the Queen during her Jubilee visit to Salisbury this week, although I understand the event was a triumph and the Salisbury Plain Military Wives’ Choir gave a stunning performance.

If I can help you with anything or you would like to attend one of my regular advice surgeries, then please do call my local office on 01380 729358.
