The last week has been dominated by news of the damage caused by floods and debate around the response of the Government and Environment Agency to the crisis.

In the constituency, I have visited the homes of some of those who have been affected and I have been in close contact with local government leaders and Government ministers over what may be required in terms of additional assistance from the army.

However, the risks of flooding in Salisbury from the River Nadder receded at the weekend and the precautionary leafleting proved not to be a precursor of mass distribution of sandbags. If anyone has particular issues they feel are not being addressed appropriately, I will happily take up concerns with the correct authority.

After making a speech on cancer treatment on Thursday and setting up a meeting with a minister for a constituent at Business Questions I spent Friday visiting Salisbury’s Foster Carers’ Network’s monthly meeting.

This discussion will inform an approach to the Education Minister to lobby for a national registration scheme for foster carers as well as to help me think through how the wide range of foster carers’ contributions can be properly recognised.

Without foster carers willing to go the extra mile, as more than 400 do in Wiltshire, the burdens on the local authority and other agencies of government would be even greater.

After a visit to Southampton University’s education department to meet constituents who are both running the course and participating in it I returned to Tilshead to meet with the parish council and Cllr Jonathon Seed, lead councillor for flooding.

It is clear that, while a lot has been provided locally by Wiltshire Council, I will need to prepare thorough feedback on all local experiences of flood relief efforts to ensure all lessons are learned. My time in the half-term recess started with a surgery on Monday and will involve a number of visits to constituents during the week. On Friday I will visit Salisbury’s law courts and participate in a Listening to Britain’s Churches event in the evening at the SP2 community centre at St Paul’s Church – an initiative of the Conservative Christian Fellowship of which I recently became a trustee.
