Salisbury votes to bring back one-hour parking

THE people of Salisbury delivered a unanimous message to Wiltshire Council bosses over the parking fiasco last night.

At a special area board meeting they called for the immediate return of a one-hour charge of £1.20 and a cut in the two-hour charge to £2.

Cabinet member John Brady warned them that it would create “a £1million funding issue” for the council.

The board accepted that it would be hard to fund the move but said next time Wiltshire is setting a budget it should consult local people earlier in the process.

The council’s deputy leader John Thomson said he had “got the message” and it would be relayed to leader Jane Scott before she meets city business leaders on Monday to work out what to do next.

It was suggested that the simplest solution, which could be brought in quickly while the council goes through the lengthy legal processes required to change the charging band structure, would be to cut the two-hour charge to £1.20 for the time being.

The 100-strong audience at South Wilts Grammar School voted by a show of hands.

There was almost no support for Wiltshire’s idea of a redemption scheme whereby traders subsidise their customers’ parking.

As this mess was created by the Tory Wiltshire council the '£1 million' shortfall should be found by the Tory Wiltshire council, not the victims of them i.e.the general public and local business's.
We didn't ask you to hike the parking charges therefore it's your bill to pay, not ours.
If you want to find £1 million' then have a look at some of your un-wanted 'visions'!!!!

I must be missing the point here but why was all-day parking not mentioned?! Regrettably I couldn't attend the meeting but it seems this has merely concentrated on the people who just want to pop in and out! What about those of us who spend the day here working and contributing to the local economy but paying the highest all day parking fees outside London! You have to pay £7.40 for anything over 5 hours so if I work a 6 hour day, it would be cheaper for me to pop back to the car and get 3 x £2 for 2 hour tickets. Unfortunately if you can't pop back to the car you end up paying a whole lot more. How is that fair? Thanks for only addressing half the issue Wiltshire Council.

Just saw Councillor Clewer (Conservative) on the TV. "We didn't properly explain to people what was being looked at. We tried but we didn't get people to listen. We realise from that that we should try a bit harder and not accept that they did not actually care about it. None of us realised how big an issue this would be and we failed to get people engaged properly. Yeah."

Typical Conservative Councillor, completely out of touch with ordinary people. "We didn't explain" "We did not get people to listen" "We should try a bit harder"

You should resign-Yeah

Not a lot of defence from the Tory huggers on here

I don't recall any party political points being made at the meeting.
I thought it was good sensible local views being expressed.
It's their incompetence that got us here, not their politics.

The main problem is that with a Unitary Council we no longer have 'local government'. Even if the Salisbury councillors had all voted against the parking charges, (which most of them didn't), the other 80-odd councillors were not going to worry to much about Salisbury's problems and will follow their party-line when voting.

I think for long term parking the idea is to encourage you to use the Park and Ride. I agree the short term issue needed to be resolved but for all day parking the park and ride is probably the right solution....although for early risers and late finishers it would be useful to extend the hours a bit.

The point is who claims competence? It was a decision made by Conservatives. They were voted in on the promise that they would run a competent administration and they failed to do so. The last Government gets the blame for all things that people don't like. So the present incumbants must face the blame if things go wrong and they made the decision. I wasn't at the meeting, but if it was filled with people who voted Conservative, you will not get any political points.

Putting up the charges was a decision made by the Conservative controlled council and voted against by both of the local Libdem and Labour councillors.

Conservative incompetence.

**** the i million shortfall is already there, every time i go through the central car park it less than half full, most days only around 1/3rd, the do good council have destroyed Amesbury and are on course to do the same in Salisbury, i have not shopped in Salisbury for many years as its a pain in the arse to pop in for somthing small and way too expensive, if you want to nip in to a shop for 10 min i would rather park on double yellow lines than pay £2.20 and go round the block if a traffic warden pops up, sorry about the fumes folks but every penny counts

Maybe not but, this is the party that won the Wiltshire seat and, they are called the Tory party. If the hat fits, wear it. Therefore it follows that it is a Tory decision to hike parking charges, not the monster raving loony party although, there is a striking similarity in their policies.

This will be fine for some, but if you have kids and need to leave quickly for an emergency at school for example, then waiting for a bus to then get back to your car isn't really ideal. Park and Ride's suit only some commuters, but in this day and age people want to be able to come and go as they please, and not wait for a bus!
