One-hour parking coming back

One-hour parking is coming back to Salisbury.

It will cost £1.50. The cost of two-hour parking will go up from £2.20 to £2.50.

The new charges will be introduced as soon as is legally possible.

They were thrashed out at a meeting today between Wiltshire Council bosses, leaders of the city council and business community and MP John Glen.

Traders' representatives also agreed to consult with Wiltshire officers on a possible cashback scheme which would allow retailers to compensate their customers for some of the cost of their parking.

Wiltshire's leader Jane Scott promised the £1.50 charge would not be increased for three years.

Other parking charges were not on the agenda at the meeting at Five Rivers Leisure Centre.

But there will be a 'Salisbury Summit' in October at which the city's economy will be discussed in more depth, and parking charges are likely to form part of that debate.

More in Thursday's Journal.
