Evening parking crackdown "killing trade"

TRAFFIC wardens working longer hours are making life difficult for small businesses and hitting takeaway trade.

The wardens have been ordered to start an hour earlier, at 7am, and finish two hours later, at 8pm.

Wiltshire Council denies it is a money-making exercise and says it is responding to complaints about inconsiderate parking.

At Yorkshire Fisheries in Fisherton Street, Robin Tuttiett said: “Basically we get traffic wardens until 8pm seven days a week.

My trade between 6pm and 8pm has dropped 50 per cent.

“I don’t blame the wardens.

Their instructions are apparently to ‘ticket anything’.”

At KK’s Chinese takeaway in Fisherton Street, proprietor Kwai Chan said: “For all these years the wardens have stopped at 6pm and there’s been no trouble.

“Why, suddenly, these extra hours? Is it really to do with money rather than safety?

“Customers have to drive around a couple of times to see if the wardens are coming. This game of cat and mouse makes life more difficult for everybody. It’s driving people away.”

John Richardson was threatened with a ticket for parking outside his chocolate shop in the High Street at 7.30pm to do some decorating.

He said: “There was no traffic, but I had to take the car up to Blue Boar Row, where there is free parking after 6pm, and then bring it back again later.

“Another man had parked outside Poundland, and he got a ticket. The wardens were going around in pairs.”

Sean Biggins, of Alijak’s cleaners, loads and unloads equipment in the High Street at 7pm three times a week. “Because I now have to move the van to a car park and back again, a 55-minute job turns into an hour and a half,” he said.

Margaret Romano got a ticket while she was ringing the bells in St Thomas’s Church early on a Sunday evening.

Her offence was to park in a loading bay in Silver Street after the shops closed.

“I have parked there most Sundays for years,”

said Ms Romano, the church’s tower captain.

“The stupid thing is, if I’d parked in the council car park it would have been free after 4pm. The whole attitude to parking is officious.”

A Wiltshire spokesman said the council gets many public complaints about illegal parking and in response, has changed wardens’ shift patterns.

They are not paid overtime.

Cabinet member for transport Dick Tonge said: “We would prefer not to issue any tickets, but will continue to do so if people park inconsiderately.”

I don't normally agree with what traffic wardens do but on this street I hope they ticket every car they can I have tried driving down Fisherton st around 7-9PM and sometimes is nearly imposable they don't care where they park just as long as they don't have to walk to get there take away food they double park, park in a way that a bus is stuck, and if a fire engine had to get down that road forget about it.

The land wardens are now greater in numbers stopping people using bikes on Salisbury plain. They are working longer hours; this has interfered with our bike riding across the plains, or harmless fun. I heard from one of their friends they tie cord across trees at neck height to deter bikers. Already one person has had an accident due to this. We want them to turn a blind eye as well. This country has so many stupid rules now people can do nothing outside of normal life. Life in the UK is being ruined by over policing. I think the recent riots are due to people becoming frustrated by this harsh upholding of silly laws. Britain is a nanny state and it's getting worse. It won’t be long before we are all sat indoors with playing board games because there will be rules and regulations against everything else.

The Tory council are certainly retaliating against the salisbury residents who dared to stand up to them! Extra patrols to catch out motorists in the evenings, why not all night patrols and ambushes?
There should be roadsigns on the approaches to Salisbury warning unsuspecting tourists of the dangers of visiting Salisbury.
Can't wait for the Tory Wiltshire councils book "A dummies guide to ruining a city"

Come off it Karl-Nobody votes Tory. Tories are nasty, Conservatives are nice. They vote Conservative. Tell it as it is-Conservative Wiltshire Council. That is who is in charge

Traffic Wardens need to prioritise where they look for offenders. On Sunday 14th August I drove through Salisbury at 9am, there were several Wardens pouncing on car's who yes may have been parked on yellow lines but not causing an obstruction whatsoever to the flow of traffic at that time. As I was exiting Salisbury, on Exeter Street, there were no less that 6 cars parked clearly on double yellow lines outside St Osmunds Church. This happens frequently at weekends and does prevent the flow of traffic in and out of Salisbury. Was there a traffic warden in sight....of course not. I think a bit of common sense is required when ticketing, but I would not be surprised if the wardens have targets to meet.

Well put drblade. It would be nice to see some common sense. These traffic wardens seem to find themselves in non-central residential streets at 9.01 on a Saturday morning looking for residents who cannot fit their cars within the permit parking areas. It would appear to be a case of notching up a few easy tickets rather than providing a useful service.

I agree with drblade regarding Exeter Street. It appears to me that most of the vehicles are parked near the church. Surely the religious, law abiding churchgoers would not even think about breaking the law and park on double lines!!

People who run businesses in salisbury and have to park to unload/get deliveries should not be penalised. However it won't matter soon as fewer people are using salisbury due to the farcical parking charges, when the car parks are near empty to match the shops.....it will be too late...mind you the roads are still awful busy, still the same ridiculous hold ups on churchfields, college, and southampton road, countess road (pfft) and elsewhere.........it
's pathetic!!
