Salisbury Journal:

IN CASE anyone is in any doubt, Salisbury City is becoming a more powerful beast, slowly and incrementally.

The recent debacle over the CCTV cameras is a prime example of how keen Wiltshire Council is to transfer assets to the city and rid itself of cost and responsibility.

There are many more such assets potentially waiting in the wings – the City Hall, for instance.

But with power comes responsibility and the city would be wise to take stock of what the implications are in times when money is so tight. No one would want to live in a bankrupt city.

That said it might also be that Salisbury is ready to raise its head again and claim its rightful place as the jewel of Wiltshire.

The spirit seen at such events as the Fisherton Street Festival and Magna Carta pageant are proof of an engaged community.

It seems many months now since the Salisbury Vision was brought to a shuddering halt by Wiltshire Council’s withdrawal of funding. It came just as its chairman Alex Tregellas seemed to be getting into his stride.

He talked of the many assets the city and its surrounds possessed. There appeared to be some traction in the engagement he had with the larger employers and he was well advanced in the production of a report that outlined the pathway to the future.

The remaining questions then are: What happened to the report that he prepared for the Vision? And who will be driving Salisbury forward in a co-ordinated fashion now that he has gone?
