SALISBURY City’s automatic promotion bid is starting to fade after being held to a frustrating home draw against Weston-super-Mare.

Last week’s two goal hero Dan Fitchett put the hosts ahead after six minutes with a potent finish, his third in the space of two games.

But Kayne McLaggon, eight minutes after the restart, haunted his former club with an equalising goal.

However, there’s no doubt the Whites will be casting an anxious eye on what could have been, with two contentious penalty decisions being waved away.

Including Brian Dutton being shoved to the ground and Jamie White’s shot striking a Weston arm, which were both disregarded by the referee. Inform Fitchett, who was on target in the FA Trophy encounter in November, provided the Whites with an upper hand on their opponents early on.

Jamie White’s previous effort rolled kindly to Rob Sinclair, who slotted through Fitchett, whose strike arrowed into the goal off a post. White was unfortunate not to double his team’s advantage, whisking a shot wide from Ricky Wellard’s lay-off.

In the 53rd minute, Will Puddy dashed off his line, following a mix up with James Clarke, enabled McLaggon to direct home the leveller.

As Kane Ingram and Martin Slocombe came close to putting Weston in the ascendancy, it was the hosts who looked odds on to pinch a dramatic winner.

Fitchett clipped the upright, Glenn Wilson’s header landed on the roof of the net and White blazed into the stands.

The draw and one-point deduction has put Darrell Clarke’s men two points behind fellow title-chasers Welling United, who also have two games in hand.

Salisbury are able to close the gap in their next two games, starting with Basingstoke Town at the Ray Mac on Tuesday night (7.45pm) and a trip to Weston on Saturday (3pm).
