HOT athletics prospect Jake Ness was among the five Salisbury winners to scoop various prizes at the fourth Wiltshire and Swindon Sports Awards.

The budding 400m runner saw off stiff competition from eight other promising athletes to be named Young Sports Personality of the Year.

Ness, currently ranked second in the UK for the 400m in his under 17 age group, has been a member of City of Salisbury since 2008 and won the south of England under 20s championship when he was 16.

Salisbury’s top running club notched up another award on September 24 at County Hall, Trowbridge, as long-serving Dave Amey was part of four people to be recognised for his long service to sport.

Amey, from Devizes Road, has been with the club for 50 years, during which he was chairman for 18 years and served on the Wiltshire Athletics Committee for 25 years.

Also on the winning list at the event hosted by former England rugby captain Phil de Glanville was Debbie Adlam, mother of football star Tori.

Mrs Adlam has become an influential figure in girls’ football, kick-starting four teams at Alderbury five years ago. She picked up the Roger Byrne Unsung Hero of the Year award for her dedication to coaching.

“I was absolutely amazed when my name was read out,” she said.

“I honestly didn’t think I was going to win. I felt like a real celebrity after the awards as I was being greeted and congratulated by many people and I was interviewed.”

Great Britain Mountain Bike Orienteering expert Emily Benham was named Sports Personality of the Year for the second time.

The Morgan’s Vale athlete is the world number three and British number one, and is now based in Norway.

When the news was announced Benham tweeted: “A wonderful evening meeting truly inspirational athletes, coaches and clubs in Wiltshire for @Sport4Wiltshire awards.”

Sports Club/Team of the year went to Sarum Orienteers, getting on the map for creating a permanent orienteering course at Avon Valley Nature Reserve last year, which secured the London 2012 Inspiremark.

Now, the club is holding its first ever orienteering competion in Salisbury on Saturday, November 2 – starting and finishing at the Cathedral Close.
