Salisbury City 2

Wrexham 1

A MOMENT of magic from defender Angus MacDonald completed Salisbury City’s fight-back over luckless Wrexham in a thrilling finale at Old Sarum.

The 20-year-old, who saw red on his home debut against Chester three weeks ago for violent conduct, turned from villain to hero with his miraculous winner in the 82nd minute.

Set-piece man Ben Wright floated in a teasing delivery and MacDonald, instead of using his head, in mid air produced an over-head kick which exploded into the roof of the net – being mauled by his teammates for grabbing his maiden goal in style.

The Dragons, who were left stunned by the winner, got off to a good start when Joe Anyinsah fired them in front five minutes before the interval. Anyinsah got his first goal for the visitors when he turned two Salisbury defenders after latching on to Brett Ormerod’s quick throw and sent a thumping strike into the top corner.

The striker looked lively before the opener with a solo effort fizzing wide and nearly toe-poking home Neil Ashton’s head down.

Salisbury changed formation at the break as their first half attacks were being thwarted on many occasions.

Things were still not going Salisbury’s way and were lucky to remain with 11 men when Will Puddy pulled Andy Bishop’s shirt off in a small scrap but the outcome was a yellow card – surprisingly for both players.

Then a grandstand three minutes, falling in Salisbury’s favour, turned the game on its head. Miles Storey, on loan from Swindon Town, played an integral part in the equaliser on the 79th minute as he sent over a cross for Dan Fitchett to nod home for his second consecutive goal.

Then the winner arrived from MacDonald in a bizarre but impeccable manner to give Salisbury the points, despite Wrexham’s Bishop seeing his stabbed effort hooked off the line by Glenn Wilson late on.

Happy Salisbury headcoach Mikey Harris, whose side last lost at home on the opening day of the season, said: “The last 15 minutes was ours this week and Barnet’s last week.”

“I’m absolutely delighted with the way we came from behind. I thought we could get back into it and we have come away with the three points.

“I’m pleased we won and showed a bit of quality. And what a finish from Angus, it was pretty special and would grace any league.

“He probably won’t repeat that in the rest of his career.”
