Wiltshire Cup quarter-final

Downton 1

THE historic fiery derby at Wick Lane served up entertainment for the punters flocking through the turnstiles on a dismal day, played in its usual gritty style.

And it certainly surpassed last year’s Easter Monday 0- 0 draw as there were four goals on offer, three of which came from Harlequins, all enough to secure their place in the Wiltshire Senior Cup semi-final.

Kane O’Keefe was on hand to draw first blood for the visitors inside ten minutes, a period in which continues to haunt the Robins.

Hot property Danny Young steered Ian Chalk’s side into a two nil lead midway through the second half, having previously whacked the crossbar.

But an exciting finish saw Dan Telfer’s free-kick fly past Max Frampton to keep the hosts’ cup dreams intact.

Just minutes later, however, Joe Sanger used his ability on the left hand side to chop in and fire beyond Charlie Aldridge to foil any chances of a late comeback.

“It was a typical derby game played on a poor pitch, but was the right result,” said boss Ian Chalk.

“It’s nice to progress into the semi-finals of the cup and hopefully we’ll win some silverware.

“I thought we started well and created plenty of opportunities in front of goal.

“We were the better side and had more quality in the right areas.”

Opposing manager Jeff Softley felt the Robins did enough to force a replay.

“We played as a proper team, and with the chances we had, I thought we deserved at least a replay.

“The conditions made it difficult but we still played some good stuff.”
