BULLISH loanee Charlie Sheringham was left elated after he slotted home his maiden goal in a roaring Challenge 2000 match to keep Salisbury City’s outside play-off chance alive.

A 93rd minute penalty, which followed two sending-offs after a melée unravelled, gave the 2,217 spectators something to cheer about at the Ray Mac on a memorable day.

Among the crowd in the 1-1 draw with Kidderminster Harriers was Charlie’s father Teddy, who celebrates his 48th birthday today.

“It was a great feeling to get the equaliser,” said Sheringham, 25.

“Obviously, there was a big melée before the goal went in which resulted in Angus MacDonald and Kyle Storer being sent off, but I had to keep my head and thankfully I scored.

“I wasn’t nervous as I practise penalties and I’m confident I can score them. I didn’t think about it too much until it went in, then I celebrated – I was buzzing.

“Kidderminster are a good side and still going for the play-offs as well. They were tough to break down so the point was very valuable.

“As I’m new to the team, I didn’t know too much about the 2,000 fan objective but it was a great atmosphere and hopefully the fans will keep coming back.

“The noise carried the team and we kept on going and it will certainly give us confidence going into our last six games.”

The striker, on loan from League Two Club AFC Wimbledon, is at the City club for 28 days, which can be extended until the end of the season. A long-term move to south Wiltshire is a possibility he’s considering.

“I’m really enjoying my football and it’s nice to be back playing 90 minutes,” said Sheringham, who stays at the chairman’s pub in Codford during the week.

“It’s not ideal joining the team so late on in the season but at the same time I need to use a loan period to get some games and goals.

“I can’t really worry about it fitting in.”

“We still have an outside chance of making the play-offs, but we need to get some wins under our belt if want to make it. My loan can be extended, so we’ll have to see. I’m definitely open to staying here permanently.”

City, winless in seven matches, seek their fifth away win at Braintree Town on Saturday (3pm).

Sheringham said: “It will be a tough game but they have had a lot of games recently, so let’s hope they will be knackered come Saturday!”
