SHREWTON United’s hopes of winning the league were cut to shreds after they suffered their first home loss of the season.

In a must-win game for both sides Shrewton started the brighter as excellent link-up play between forwards Jesse Walters and Ross Bentall caused the visitors’ defence problems as twice Bentall was denied by the Southbrook keeper and they had a succession of corners.

But, after 30 minutes, Southbrook hit Shrewton on the counter attack as their winger beat George Plank before firing a pinpoint cross to the far post which was superbly volleyed home.

The goal helped the visitors get a foothold in the game and they doubled their lead minutes after the restart as a corner was met with a firm header that flew into the top corner.

With an advantage to defend, the visitors were happy to put everyone behind the ball as Shrewton laid siege on the Southbrook goal.

However, the visitors remained dangerous on the break and a smart save from Matt Boselli in the Shrewton goal kept them in the game.

The match exploded into life and Dean Foot forced his way into the box before slotting home to make it 2-1.

Bentall and Walters went close again for Shrewton as the clock ticked down.

But as Shrews surged forward, they left gaping holes in defence which allowed the visitors to restore a two-goal cushion. Bentall converted a spot kick late on, it ended 2-3.

United's next game is at Bemerton Heath Harlequins in a Hospital Cup semi-final tie on Tuesday, April 8.
