FATIGUE was brushed aside for City of Salisbury’s Brewster family who celebrated three top notch performances at the London marathon on Sunday.

Policeman Ben Brewster again demonstrated consistent racing quality, going through the half way point near Tower Bridge in 1hr 21mins before slowing slightly to cross the finish line on The Mall in a still excellent 2.47.55.

His father Michael judged his 26mile debut to perfection in the Spring sunshine by clocking a well-earned 3.06.54.

But the biggest plaudits were saved for Ben’s mother Sarah Brewster, who only took up the sport two years ago after deciding to give up smoking, beat her target time of four hours with a commendable debut 3.52.47 to finish well up the age rankings.

Stuart Holloway set out his stall with a half way timing of 1.16 that would have given him the classy result he deserves. But as with hundreds of others on the day – even including double Olympic gold medallist Mo Farah - he then paid a heavy price in the latter stages on the way to a gritty 2.50.29.

Jon Rich clocked a more conservative first 13miles in 1.31 and was tantalisingly close to beating the three hour barrier with a fine 3.00.15, leaving himself a target for next year. Dave West too is likely to improve his 3.16.46.

Katie Sloane ran a highly promising 3.35.55, Fiona Ross-Russell defied her limited training with 3.40.29, and Chrissy Gorham enjoyed a good personal best 3.51.10. Rosie Adlard also did well with 3.56.54 and Andy Gillespie completed the set in 4.11.54.

•Chris Southern travelled to Manchester for his marathon outing and he wasn’t disappointed; showing the kind of form that has propelled him up the result boards’ in recent weeks. He managed a fine 2.46.52. Slower conditions prevailed at Brighton, where Craig Murphy completed his 26miler with a steady 3.45.23.
