HUGE strides are being made by a Salisbury father in his quest to set up a basketball club for his son, writes Tim Birkbeck.

Aleister Martin, whose son Gavin is a basketball enthusiast, is edging closer to launching a team in the area and is currently seeking a coach.

He has been drumming up interest in the community, working closely with Wiltshire Council’s sports development officer Karlene Jammeh.

Jammeh has set about arranging coaching sessions for ten weeks aimed at ten to 16-year-olds.

“Junior basketball has developed significantly across mid and north Wiltshire through Wiltshire Council’s sports development team,” she said.

“Terry Bathe from Innov8 Sportz CIC has been the main deliverer on these programmes for us, and again will be the main coach for the Salisbury sessions.”

Sessions are set to start at Sarum Academy on September 19 (6pm), costing £3 each.

Martin said: “The intention is to run the sessions as a series of coaching nights to establish the interest among the young people of Salisbury in playing for a club. And if the interest is there, we’ll aim to organise a more formal club.”
