TEENAGER Jake Rawkins bagged a double for Sarum Youth Seniors as they extended their unbeaten run to three games with victory at home to Wootton Bassett in Wiltshire League Premier Division.

But it wasn’t the best of starts for the hosts, who slipped behind ten minutes before the half-time whistle when a long effort flew over the head of keeper Chris Brown.

A frustrated Sarum were ushered to remain patient during the break, and the team talk paid-off soon after.

Jake, the son of manager Dave Rawkins, caused Wootton havoc with his electrifying pace and he got the equaliser after darting past two defenders and providing a neat finish.

The teams were odds on to share the spoils, until Sarum had a set piece in the dying stages of the game.

On the edge of the box, the 16-year-old whipped an audacious free kick into the top corner for the three points.

Boss Rawkins remarked after the 2-1 win: “I was really pleased with the three points and the performance.

“The boys played with tremendous tempo which was too much for Wootton as we controlled the game.

“They needed to be patient and play their own game, which eventually paid-off, but we do need to be more clinical in front of goal as we should have been out of sight in the second half.

“We lost to Wootton four times last year, so it again shows just how much they are improving still and, with the next batch joining the squad this year, the future looks bright.”
