A COMPREHENSIVE win over Porton Sports is how The Wanderers finished their league campaign for the year.

The defending champions, a point behind new leaders Alderbury in Salisbury and District Premier Division, started the 1-3 victory inside 15 minutes when Steph Tinkler spotted the cantering Alex Cook who provided the finish.

Tinkler, in the visitors’ next move, turned provider for Tim Fewins who made it 2-0 and bagged his 11th goal in as many games.

Porton soon gathered momentum and had the perfect opportunity to halve the deficit from the penalty spot following a mistimed challenge.

However, keeper Graham Kitley was equal to the task and denied Dan Jones from 12 yards.

At the other end in the second 45 minutes, The Wanderers were awarded a penalty for handball and playmaker Tinkler made no mistake in making it 3-0.

There was still time for Andy Mearns to blast an unstoppable thunderbolt into the top corner but The Wanderers stood strong and deservedly took the three points.

Player/manager Liam McConnell commented: “Porton is one of the trickiest places to go in this league and it was vital we kept up the momentum with this victory.

“Despite how well we played at times, it was a very open game and, to be fair, both keepers were in great form.”

The Wanderers are away at North Bradley in the quarter final of the Wiltshire Junior Cup on Saturday (1.45pm).
