SALISBURY Angling Club's match anglers took all four top places in an interclub competition with Kennet Ospreys on Sunday.

Thirty anglers turned up to the match, fished on the River Avon between Stratford-sub-Castle and Salisbury and for once the Avon fished better than expected.

Dave Docherty won the day with 12lb 12oz of roach, all caught on the pole with maggot as bait, while Charlie Wernham chose the same bait, but opted for a rod, reel and stick float, banking 11lb 13oz of roach.

Third-placed, Jimmy Smith, had four chub for 10lb 8oz and Chris Opey was just six ounces behind him in fourth spot with a mixed bag.

The stretch chosen for the match was fairly high and carrying some colour whereas further downstream, after being joined by the Nadder and Wylye, the river was flowing much faster with a lot more colour and this combination has meant fishing has been hard on the London AA stretches at Britford.

The main river is too pacy and anglers trying it have, in the main, blanked. Those choosing the carrier have found some fish, roach to 12 ounces or so and a few small chub, but it has been difficult fishing.

Most fisheries report a slow week with few anglers about. Rivers are high and coloured after recent heavy rain and the cold snap appears to be keeping many fishermen indoors.
