ANOTHER feat was reached as Salisbury RFC’s campaign just got even better.

Unfazed by the Southern Counties North’s pacemakers, the Green and Whites added another accolade (Southern Counties Championship) to their name with a comprehensive victory over High Wycombe.

Salisbury’s defensive steel and attacking prowess showed in Buckinghamshire with a 29-7 win – their tenth straight one - as they skipped into the next stage of the Intermediate Cup.

With the game barely five minutes old, Wycombe offended and the ever-reliable Tom Pottage slotted the penalty.

Salisbury continued to attack with pace and were rewarded when the nimble feet of Tom Ranaboldo tiptoed along the touch line before crashing over for the first try of the game. This was converted by Pottage.

Salisbury’s next attack saw a loose pass well intercepted by the Wycombe left wing who sprinted from his own half to touch down under the posts, and a conversion saw them back in the game at 10- 7.

Salisbury then had to defend robustly and after surviving the hosts’ pressure they set up a rolling maul and forced their opponents back towards their own line.

As the maul went to ground, Dave Tonge found Ritchie Roe who timed his pass to perfection and Jon Goldsmith, picking the perfect line, raced through the home defence to score the stand-out try.

The resulting kick off was gathered by Rob Larcombe who made good ground before offloading to Luke Esnouf who sprinted clear to score beneath the posts giving Pottage a relatively simple conversion and Salisbury had the game by the scruff of the neck.

The second half saw Wycombe enjoy plentiful possession but they posed no real threat as the Salisbury defensive effort, led by tackle machine Jon Kay, and Jack Martin, continually knocked them backwards.

The solitary score in the half came from Gordon Grant and Pottage, again, kicked the extras.

First team manager Matt Pallas said: “In the past we may not have travelled very well to High Wycombe when we’ve encountered them in the league. “However, Saturday was completely different.

“The squad prepared extremely well under head coach Dan Jeffries. They managed to identify the areas that needed to be improved on in previous games.

"In many ways having travelled that distance and played a team that we hope to lock horns with next season feels that we’ve got a monkey off our backs, the confidence having won the game up at Wycombe is massive. The lads will take a lot from travelling up there and getting a big win on the road.”

Salisbury’s reward is a trip to unbeaten Coney Hill to battle for the right to represent the South West against the London and South East Champions on Easter weekend.

A win would put Salisbury ever-closer to a dream appearance at Twickenham.
