THE new champions of the Hampshire Cup are Salisbury City Under-15s.

The impressive teenagers lifted the cup and were wrapped in glory after defeating unbeaten Havant and Waterlooville 2-1 on Saturday at the Winklebury football complex in Basingstoke.

Salisbury broke the deadlock when Josh Sommerton took the opportunity inside the box.

Both sides created more chances but it was Havant who poached the next goal, equalising from distance a shot looped over Alfie Glover in the Salisbury goal.

The second half continued at a high tempo, with both teams showing equal commitment.

A quick passing move enabled George Higgins to break at speed, only for the Havant keeper to trip the in-form player in the box. Higgins picked himself up and sent a smart spot-kick home for Salisbury's second of the game, the eventual winner.

Salisbury manager Richard Rendall and boss Mark Sommerton were delighted with the win and new it was going to be a physical battle.

“Cup finals can be tense affairs and unfortunately the pitch was very dry which didn't enable us to play our normal quick free-flowing football,” Rendall said.

“But today was for the boys and parents to enjoy and they certainly did!”
