PATIENT The Wanderers waited until extra time to reach the final of the trophy they have lifted for the past two seasons after edging a pulsating encounter at South Newton.

After Billy Poole’s opener was cancelled out by Adam Jones as the original 90 minutes finished 1-1, stalwart Nick Newman popped up with a late AET winner to send his side into the final of the Charity A Cup.

Liam McConnell’s outfit will lock horns with Stockton and Codford in the silverware showdown on April 11.

“That may not have been the best we have played but that performance was firstclass in terms of spirit and togetherness of this team,” reflected McConnell, after watching his side reach their first cup final of the season.

“We've had a rough ride recently but I never doubted the ability this squad has.

“There were some big performances from players who don't normally get the headlines and it was needed.

South Newton can be proud of their performance, they play football the right way.

For us, we can look forward to another final and let's just see what happens.”

With both sides looking to avenge poor results last week, it was the hosts who fell into a one-goal lead.

A venomous strike from Poole gave the hosts the upper hand going into the break.

The visitors stepped up the tempo in the second period, in which they dominated possession and territory, and the leveller soon came.

Steph Tinkler and Jones combined for a short corner and it was Jones’s delicate chip that baffled a crowded penalty area to level things up.

South Newton were looking to restore their lead but that proved challenging when they were reduced to ten-men following Rich Tutton’s instant dismissal 20 minutes from time.

Despite the extra man advantage, The Wanderers could not discover the elusive second goal in normal time.

But the wait was scotched in the 28th minute of extra time when Jones picked out Newman who bravely threw himself ahead of the keeper to net the winner.

Losing South Newton player/ manager Keith Darling said: “We all wanted this result to go our club's way and, while the boys showed plenty of fire and belief in themselves today.

“We cannot continue to make the stupid mistakes that in the end cost us so massively.”
