SARUM Youth Seniors and Shrewton United shared the spoils in Tuesday’s derby match which was played in strong winds on a difficult surface at Castle Meadows.

Shrewton started with the wind behind them and camped in the Sarum half almost from kick-off as they tried to use the conditions to their advantage.

Shrews forward Craig Appleby had the first chance of the game after five minutes as he had his lobbed effort saved by the Sarum keeper. Minutes later, Wayne Appleby should have opened the scoring as he fired wide when through on goal.

Sarum did improve as the half wore on and on a rare foray forward they earned a penalty after a late tackle from Steve Parry rightly resulted in the awarding of a spot-kick. Archie Lovegrove stepped up to put Matt Cross the wrong way to make it 1-0.

The remainder of the half saw Barr go close twice but the Sarum keeper denied him on both occasions before he made another fine stop to deny Wayne Appleby on the stroke of half-time.

On the hour, Shrewton equalised as a floated free kick was flicked on by Fabian Morrison into the path of Dean Shaw who volleyed home with the outside of his foot from just inside the box.

The goal led to further pressure from Shrewton who went closest through Nathan Osgood, who had an effort destined for the top corner spectacularly tipped over.

Shrews manager Scott Young said: “I am disappointed we didn’t win especially as they only had one shot on target, which was a penalty, and other than that they never threatened.”

“We have really struggled to score recently and it says something that we needed one of our defenders to score to earn a point.”

Easter Saturday sees a busy line-up for both sides.

Sarum Youth host Southbrook, while Shrewton are away at Wilts Calne Town - both 3pm kick offs.

Shrewton are currently sixth and Sarum are 13th in Wiltshire League Premier Division.
