THE founder of a successful non-league side has pulled the plug after four years.

Liam McConnell decided it was time for The Wanderers, who played in Salisbury and District (Saturday) Premier League, to step down from grassroots football with their seven trophies, which includes two league titles and the 2015 Lord Bledisloe Cup.

"It's been a great ride, but it's time for us to get off," said player/manger McConnell.

" It's been brilliant, so many people to thank, in particular the support we've encountered, our sponsors and of course the players.

Not just the lads who have seen the whole thing through with me, but to those who joined us.

If you'd have offered me seven trophies when I started out I'd have snapped your hand off so to have won what we have is special."

"Even though we have called it a day, I do hope the competitiveness in the local leagues continue.

"The number of sides is a worry but if sides can be put together like The Wanderers then it gives everyone else the opportunity to do the same, you don't have to be associated to an existing club, create one."

The Wanderers signed off by dishing out a five-goal pasting to Stockton & Codford.

McConnell is spending next season as part of the management team at Wessex Division One outfit Laverstock and Ford.
