A WOUNDED war veteran from Ludgershall, who is training for a Help for Heroes sporting event, took some useful tips from three Australian cricket stars.

Steven Caruana is a member of the Help for Heroes Cricket Club.

He met with Aussie bowlers Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Johnson and former paceman Ryan Harris last week.

The trio met him during their visit to Headley Court Military Rehabilitative Centre in Surrey.

The bowlers, who were fresh from their recent demolition of England during the second Ashes test at Lords, had a tour of the state-of-the-art rehabilitation facility.

There, they met with members of the H4H cricket team, who are preparing to play a special match at the Oval in September.

The match is part of the charity’s ‘Sports Recovery’ programme, set up in 2008.

It is aimed at helping mentally and physically wounded ex-forces personnel in their recovery.

Steven, who was medically discharged from the Army in 2013, is one of those involved in the rehabilitation programme.

He said: “Playing for the Help for Heroes Cricket Club offers not only the physical benefits of keeping fit and active, but also gives huge psychological and social benefits too.

“The players have built self-esteem and a sense of pride since being part of the club and most importantly, the Help for Heroes Cricket Club gives us the chance to be part of a close-knit group again, something many of us haven’t experienced since leaving the forces.”

Tickets are still available for the Cricket for Heroes Match on Thursday September 17.
