FOUR Wessex League clubs are bidding for FA Vase success – kicking off their pilgrimage to Wembley on Saturday.

The major non-league competition sees Salisbury FC, Bemerton Heath Harlequins, Amesbury Town and Downton FC among 176 teams from step five downwards gunning for victory in the first round qualifiers on Saturday.

The Whites, who missed out on the FA Cup due to being a re-formed club, have a home fixture after opposition Wincanton Town asked the FA to switch grounds.

Manager Steve Claridge is tipping his side to go all the way: “There’s absolutely no reason why we cannot go and get a good result,” he said.

“We’ll be going all out on Saturday to win the game and keep the run going.”

“Let’s get this one done and move onto the next one and see where we go. We missed out on the FA Cup so this is one we really need to take advantage of.

“Can you imagine the amount of people who will be coming through the turnstiles watching us play? An opportunity to play at Wembley, for this level, and a play on a stage like that – blimey, I know what I’d be willing to do.

“In a way, is it a blessing in disguise that we’re in this league? We’ll see. If we do well in this cup people won't be worrying about the standard of opposition we’ll play against, they'll worry about booking their Wembley tickets!”

Elsewhere Bemerton, who reached the last 16 in 2012/2013, travel to Sherborne Town, Downton are at Oldland Abbotonians and Amesbury return to Cadbury Heath.

Blues boss Gareth Horner has told JournalSport his players are in for a real test against the Western League Premier Division outfit.

He said: “The players are ready for our trip to Bristol this weekend for our FA Vase game but again come up against opponents from the step above us so it's another tough game.”

“Jim and I are looking for maybe one or two new recruits in certain areas and we will see how that goes.”

All games are 3pm kick-offs. Victors will bank £600 in prize money.

Lavvy have a bye and meet Cowes Sports in the second round. If Salisbury clubs are successful on Saturday, Whites will host Folland Sports, Amesbury welcome Almondsbury UWE, Bemerton host Andover Town or Fawley and Robins face either East Cowes Victoria or Lymington on October 3.
