CITY of Salisbury hot prospect Jay Domoney ended his track season on a buoyant note in the England Athletics age group championships at Bedford.

Up against the best under-17s’ opposition in the country at his chosen distance of 1,500m, he did well to qualify after a long campaign.

In the heats, he ran brilliantly to take on the rest of the field over the last lap and then to contest a photo-finish between five rivals, setting a new club record as well as a personal best of 4min 5.16sec and earning a place in the final.

There, unfazed once more by quicker opposition, he again ran with gusto and clipped a further 0.3sec off his new best-ever time to further improve the club record, finishing a brave eighth.

For the club’s four other selected competitors, all in the under-15s category, this was their first taste of a national track and field championships.

Ottilie Knight threw the javelin 29.75m for 14th place, Skye Allen clocked 13.37sec in the 100m and 27.85sec in the 200m, not quick enough to make it through to the finals.

Newcomer Jacob Norcliffe was similarly unable to go forward from his heat of the 200m and Sam Coles earned a respectable tenth place in the heats of the 1500m with 4min 33sec.
