SALISBURY FC chairman David Phillips is calling for stewards to volunteer on matchdays.

Half a dozen fans are needed to man areas of the stadium and, in return, will receive free entry and refreshments.

Phillips, who acted as chief steward in Tuesday night's 5-0 thrashing of Verwood Town, has warned keeping costs down is essential to dodging financial woes the old club faced in the past.

"It really is vital that the club recruits as many as volunteers as possible. The Ray Mac is a very expensive ground to maintain, given our rent on it these days, along with all the other bills associated," he said in his midweek programme notes.

"If we are not to experience the sort of financial problems the previous club endured and send out the best possible team we can - one that supporters deserve - then we need to keep our considerable costs down as much as possible.

"I can assure you that the board are all volunteers, and have also put money into the club, and we work long and hard all the various tasks needed to keep the ground in order and the club running."
