PLUCKY Salisbury RFC blew Towcestrians' bubble by damaging their unbeaten record with a scorching home win.

Green and Whites scotched the Northamptonshire visitors' 100 per record in their opening two South West 1 (East) games with a resilient display.

Inspired by former youth academy player Mike Brown's show at full back in England's opening Rugby World Cup win over Fiji, Salisbury put the high-fliers to the sword by 32-22.

The hosts got off to a super start in front of a crowded Castle Road as Towcestrians, play-off final reachers for the last two consecutive seasons, were startled.

Early on, Dave Tonge took a quick tap and fed skipper Liam Gilbert, who crashed over for a try, converted by Tom Lane.

The scoreline was increased when, following a catch and drive from a line out, the visitors were adjudged to have infringed and a penalty try was awarded, Lane again adding the extras for a 14-0 lead.

Towcestrians possessed some very talented and well drilled backs and slowly but surely nibbled away at the home side lead but their indiscipline cost them, Lane adding a penalty to make the half time score 17-8.

The refreshed visitors, after the break, immediately made their mark with a converted try to reduce the arrears to within two of Dan Jeffries' men.

They then added another converted score, but Salisbury refused to rest on their laurels and kicking-machine, Lane, a fly half amassed a further five penalty scores to see his side nudge over the line.

Player coach Liam Gilbert expressed the coaching team’s pleasure with the performance, describing it as “a complete team effort on which we can build”.

A journey to undefeated Maidenhead lies ahead for Salisbury on Saturday.
