SEVERAL Salisbury and South Wilts Golf stars played an imperative role in recording a lustrous feat.

Dom Burgess, Tom Stagg and Charlie Dunn tasted stardom when lifting the English Boys’ County Championship for Wiltshire Under-18s.

The teenagers, part of the eight-man squad, were pushed all the way by Northamptonshire but came through in a grandstand climax 6-3 at King’s Lynn Golf Club.

Wiltshire had 4.5 points in the bag and had to secure another half point to win the title. It was provided in emphatic style by Dom Burgess who won the 18th to square his match and win the championship.

The 16-year-old former Bishop Wordsworth's pupil, now at Lee Westwood's Golf School, played a superb chip from above the green which finished within inches of the cup and gave him a par on the final of the three-day tournament last month.

Dom's father, Dereck, who lives in Farley, said: "They went into the tournament as massive underdogs but used that to their advantage.

"The Wiltshire squad felt like a team, helping and supporting each other.

"Lots of hard work has helped them get there and to be national champions is a real privilege."

Manager Ian Welding also lauded the young guns.

"I am so proud of them, I can’t praise the lads enough, they have been absolutely outstanding," he said.

"I can’t single out one person, it’s a team effort and everyone played their part.

“This is absolutely fantastic and massive for the county."
