ROBBIE Matthews can't wait for the new season to start and fulfil his ambition of playing in the National Conference, which from next term will be known as the Blue Square Premier.

Matthews, now in his second spell with his home-town club, played a pivotal role in City's play-off adventure - scoring in both semi-finals and helping set up the winner in Sunday's final against Braintree Town.

"I got the ball on the halfway line and the defender wasn't near me so I just turned and ran in and I just waited for him to close me down before laying it off to Princey, who put in a good ball for Tubbsy to slot it in.

"It was a nice little move." explained the striker, whose second half appearances this season as a substitute for Paul Sales, have proved so effective.

"I don't like being a sub but obviously it works for us," said Matthews. "And if it's right for the team then I'm happy."

Matthews, who away from the Ray Mac works as a bricklayer, is keen to make his mark in the new league and is more than happy to work even harder to ensure City's stay in the big league is not short-lived.

So, Robbie Matthews - Conference player. How does that sound?

"I love it. We're there and hopefully now we can hold our own and stay up.

"I'm definitely up for training a bit more if that's what happens.

"I've got quite a hard job but I'll dedicate myself and hopefully take the chance."
