STAR striker Danny Finnigan fired an an extra time winner to book Amesbury Town's place in the third round of the Wessex League Cup.

The red-hot striker was Blues' hero for the second time in five days as he delivered the ultimate blow over Christchurch when the tie was heading to a nerve-racking penalty shoot-out.

Finnigan tried to set-up Cameron Roach but as the ball deflected back to him he ruthlessly slotted home four minutes into the second period of additional time.

Blues did have chances to seal the second round tie in normal time, with Nic Turpin, Danny Western and Finnigan among those creating chances.

"We were pleased to get the game on given the awful weather and credit to Richard Bawden for that," said boss Gareth Horner.

"The pitch held up well but at times made it hard going. We tried to play where possible and, in fairness, Christchurch have improved considerably since we played them early on.

"That said we were the better side as we created some great chances and limited them to maybe two or three."

The only downside to the day was Finnigan picking up a yellow card, his fifth of the season, which sees him miss Saturday's league trip to AFC Stoneham.

Horner added: "A clean sheet was a massive positive but Finners (Danny Finnigan) getting booked now means he will miss a game due to it being his fifth which is disappointing but we have plenty of fire power in behind him."

Blues will face Sydenhams Wessex Premier leaders Salisbury FC in the next round, providing the Whites get past Fleet Spurs.

They will know the outcome once the two pit their wits at the Ray Mac on Tuesday, December 1.

"I think it's too early to talk about our next opponents as Salisbury are still to play fleet spurs but, if given the chance, we would be happy to host the early Premier Division pacesetters," said Horner.

"Could we have had a tougher draw? Probably not but if you are going to win competitions like this we have to beat the best."
