THE play-offs are calling for Salisbury RFC after Towcestrians wrapped up the South West 1 (East) title with one game spare.

Green and Whites will have to fight for a place in National League 3 South West via a one-off game a week on Saturday.

They guaranteed second spot with a nervy 20-14 victory over Witney, while Towcestrians were crowned champions after romping to a 71-0 win against High Wycombe, coupled with being rewarded the points of last week's abandoned fixture.

The contest, between two teams of similar abilities at the business end of the season, was inspired by two tries after Salisbury were trailing 5-0.

One came from veteran Richard West, who is retiring at the end of the season, and the other by Dave Tonge. Tom Lane made the conversions look simple and his two other penalty kicks gave the hosts a victory by six points.

Dan Jeffries' men finish the league season at lowly Reading on Saturday, knowing a good result will secure them a home advantage in the play-offs.

It was a busy few days at Castle Road club as their revitalised ladies' team played their first match after a four-year absence.

They took on Dutch side Thor Dames, who are touring the UK, on Friday night.

Jo Emslie, a former Wasps player, who has been instrumental in forming a team, said: "We contested hard and scored three good tries. This is a great start for the new SRFC Ladies' team and I hope we can go on improving from here."

The squad trains at the club on Sunday mornings.
