FOR the first time in nearly two years, not a result was achieved in any of the Hampshire League’s 20 divisions as rain decimated the whole programme.

Some clubs made the journey to their opposition, including Woodgreen who travelled to St Helen’s Field in Southsea and had made the toss with Portsmouth 2nds in County Division 3 South only for the rain to set in just before play was due to commence.

Godshill, who were looking for their first win of the season in Regional Division 1 West, arrived at Hythe and Dibden but, despite the wicket being covered, the outfield was very wet and then light drizzle turned to consistent rain so any thought of play was abandoned.

It was the same story for nearly all of more than 300 teams with many of the matches called off well before visiting teams set off for their opponents’ venues.

This was the case at Ellingham who made an early decision about their Picket Post ground and prevented Ventnor from starting their trip from the Isle of Wight for their County Division 1 encounter.

Alderholt were lucky as they were the one side without a game in Regional Division 2 West and they are hoping for good news about their leading run scorer Tom Morris who badly injured his right bicep in their game the previous week.

Having played most of his cricketing career with Corinthians in the Bournemouth League until they lost the use of the ground at Dean Park, Morris joined Alderholt 15 years ago predominately as a swing bowler.

Several seasons ago Morris turned his attention to his batting as the Dorset club had an abundance of bowlers but a shortage of reliable batsmen. Since then his attacking style has been a feature of his early order position.

A visit to a specialist is due late this week and then Morris will know if he can continue to play without doing more damage to his upper arm.

“I hope to be able to bat again even if it is in a more defensive role,” said Morris, who admitted that he might not be able to contain himself if a loose delivery came along and he was unable to stop himself from smashing it over the boundary!
