A COMMANDING all-round display saw Winterbourne put neighbours Amesbury to the sword in County Division 4 West with an 89-run victory.

After electing to bat first, Winterbourne opener Jamie Harvey had an early reprieve after being dropped behind in the third over, as Joe Cornelius found plenty of movement and bounce in a fiery opening spell. After being dropped again in the following over, Cornelius finally picked up a deserved wicket, bowling Craig Johnson for a duck with an inswinging yorker. Matt Windows joined Harvey and looked comfortable with plenty of pace coming onto the bat but was finding runs hard to come by with some excellent tight bowling.

Harvey continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over at a healthy rate but he eventually fell for 33, caught on the boundary.

Charlie Everett immediately stamped his authority on the game with a huge six over square leg and hit a quickfire 30 before being caught off the bowling of Sumith Surendran.

Windows and Gurung put on a vital 49 runs in 10 overs before Windows holed out for a fine 59 and Gurung followed two overs later for 42.

Some late hitting from Ed Dadd (16*) and Matt Newman (11*) took the score to a respectable 217-6 after 45 overs.

Winterbourne made a fantastic start in the field with miserly opening spells from Joe Cunningham and Chris Breeze. Breeze struck in his second over, trapping Andy Renshaw LBW for two. Cunningham (1 for 18) then bowled Derbyshire with an absolute beauty and Amesbury were reeling at 4 for 2 from eight overs.

Breeze chipped in with another wicket to complete his 10 over spell with astonishing figures of two wickets for seven runs.

With the openers now out of the attack, Amesbury had it all to do with 185 runs required from 27 overs, but with Cornelius now at the crease, Amesbury were always in with a chance.

Skipper Ryan Hughes brought himself into the attack and bowled the perfect line to Cornelius, giving him no room as he swung the ball in just short of a length. After being deprived of the strike, but hitting a quick 32, Hughes finally had his man as he bowled Cornelius in the 30th over.

From then on Amesbury were never in the game as Gurung (2-48) bowled Dale Gower and had Surendran caught behind. Hughes bowled opener Jayme Underwood for 26 who battled it out until the 31st over, and then leading wicket taker Dadd finished off the innings with two quick wickets to bring the innings to an end for 129.
