SALISBURY Under-9s won a dramatic penalty shootout to be crowned champions at Southbrook's tournament.

The Whites, who entered the competition to gauge the level of competition in next season's Eastleigh-based league, came second in the group stages.

They then won their quarter-final 3-0 against Wyvern Rangers before defeating Winchester Black 2-0 in the last four.

Sholing were there opponents in the final and after a tense encounter it finished 1-1 at full-time and was decided on spot kicks.

Eloheenee Merkel fired a winning penalty to see the Whites win 3-2 and lift the trophy.

Manager Kevin Randall said: "I'm really proud of the team's effort, hard work and determination; their spirit shone through.

"They really deserved this success. We faced storms, torrential rain, many stoppages, it almost looked like the tournament would be cancelled at one stage."
