SALISBURY Tri Club (STC) athletes were bidding to follow in the footsteps of Olympic gold and silver winning Brownlee brothers when racing at the weekend.

After Team GB's Alistair won gold and Jonathan Brownlee silver at Rio, the city club's members set out to snap up podium places.

Bulk of the action took place at the New Forest Olympic distance event, comprising a 1.1k lake swim, a 33k road bike and a 10k hilly trail run. But, unlike the weather in Brazil, Salisbury’s triathletes battled in the blustery conditions.

First home was David Hartley in two hours and seven minutes to finish 14th and fourth in age group.

Second Salisbury racer over the line was Nigel Peterson in 2:15, coming 20th and third in age group.

Irfon Thomas completed his first Olympic event in a respectable 02:32, ahead of club stalwart Peter Clements, who crossed the line in 03:16 and first place in his age group.

Elsewhere, Sandra Webster completed her second ever event at the Frome triathlon in a time of 1:50.

Further afield, Sally Orange tackled the Copenhagen Ironman coming home in a time of 14:42 for the race that challenges competitors over a 3.8k swim 180km bike ride and 42k marathon.
