SALISBURY RFC left it late as they returned to winning ways with a 27-22 win over Bracknell in National League 3 South West.

In a scrappy affair at Castle Road, Salisbury opened the scoring after only four minutes when winger Jonathan Goldsmith shook off a tackler and raced down the wing to score a try, converted by fly-half Robbie Keith.

He then added a penalty soon after to make the score 10-0.

Towards the end of the half, Bracknell forced their way over for a converted try, to make the score at the interval 10-7 to Salisbury.

From the restart, the visitors came out strongly and added two tries, one converted to lead 19-10.

A further penalty from Keith and a try from Tom Ranaboldo with a conversion, restored Salisbury’s lead to 20-19.

With the game drifting on, Bracknell hit a penalty to make the score 22-20 heading into injury time.

But with seconds remaining, Salisbury Winger Dan Hammond powered over the line, but was denied a try when a Bracknell defender knocked the ball out of his hands.

Fortuitously, scrum-half Dave Tonge was lurking, and pounced on the loose ball to score the winning try, which was the converted for a final score of 27-22 in Salisbury’s favour.

Salisbury RFC will be in action next against Launceston away on Saturday. The match kicks off at 3pm.

The team’s next home fixture is on Saturday, October 1 against Brixham (3pm).
