ELLINGHAM & Ringwood progressed to the next round of the RFU Junior Vase thanks to a last-gasp try from Dominic Pitt in a 33-29 win at Woking on Saturday.

Scrum-half Josh Butcher kicked a penalty and wing three quarter Matt Moore crossed in the corner to open up an 8-0 lead. A lapse in concentration resulted in Woking scoring a converted try on a rare visit to the Ellingham half to narrow the gap to 8-7, but after that the visitors dominated the first half.

They scored two further tries from Jonny Joiner on the other wing and full back Dominic Pitt. Butcher added another penalty and a conversion to make it 23-7 at the break.

When captain Callum Butler powered over for another try in the second half, the game looked over at 28-7, but Woking had other ideas. Playing with a strong wind behind their backs the home side stuck to a simple game plan and clawed their way back into the game with four tries. The final try was converted to give Woking a 29-28 lead with two minutes remaining.

From the restart, Ellingham won a scrum in the Woking half and full back Pitt finished a good move to score an unlikely winning try that takes the New Forest side into the next round.

Elsewhere, Ellingham & Ringwood’s women’s side maintained their 100 per cent record in National Challenge Division 2 South with an impressive 48-0 win away at Havant on Sunday.

Both centre Jas Clarke, pictured, and full-back Emma Lipsett scored two tries, with the others coming from wing three-quarter Chloe Barrett, scrum half Paige Darvill-White, centre Anna Stephenson and wing three-quarter Charlotte Smith. Chloe Barrett also kicked three conversions, with the other from the trusty boot of Darvill-White.

The firsts have no game on Saturday. They return to action on October 29 at home to Petersfield.

The women, who have a rest this weekend, return to action the following weekend on the Sunday at Dorchester and Weymouth.
