BRANSGORE'S Scott Mitchell confessed he may have looked too far ahead prior to his shock defeat to Geert De Vos at the BDO World Championship.

Number-two seed Mitchell tumbled to a 4-2 loss at the hands of the Belgian despite leading 2-1 at one stage, ending his hopes of repeating his Lakeside title win of 2015.

Victory would have handed the Dorset county thrower a spot in the quarter-final but now he must wait to have another crack at the global crown.

Mitchell said: "You want to win another one and the draw started opening up for me. Maybe I looked in the wrong place, which is something I don't usually do.

"You don't think you are going to be another one of the seeds going out, you look at it positively. I felt I had enough to beat Geert. Everything felt similar to the year I won it but you live and learn.

"To be on that stage is lovely when you are winning and it's a harsh place when you are losing. I have done plenty of winning there in the past few years and it's just the way it is."

De Vos had been knocked out of the Frimley Green tournament in all five of his previous appearances, with four of those defeats coming against the eventual winner – one of which was Mitchell.

And De Vos was clearly in no mood to lengthen his second-round woe as he hit no fewer than three 11-dart finishes and nine 180s.

Although Mitchell initially led the set count 1-0 and later 2-1, 'Foxy' would not go away and reeled off six legs in a row during a stunning comeback.

Mitchell added: "I made a few mistakes on doubles and he jumped on them. He got himself in front and that was that.

"I didn't hit the shots at the turning points of the game but you can't begrudge someone who has waited five years to beat you.

"You don't want it to happen here. You'd rather it happened at the Dutch Open in a month's time but that's the way it goes.

"It makes you appreciate the good times. There are no gimme games here because of the quality of players you play."

Having beaten the 46-year-old Mitchell, De Vos immediately lost his darts and only found them an hour-and-a-half later after they were handed in.
