AFC STONEHAM – Sydenhams Wessex Division One team of January – inflicted a 2-0 defeat over Downton at Wick Lane.

The visitors took the lead when a speculative effort was spilled by keeper Charlie Aldridge and Oliver Forbes was there to pounce.

A second goal soon followed after a ball in to the Downton box was not dealt with and more hesitant defending allowed Ashley Ledger to stab home.

Downton created chances in the second half, but none came to fruition against a side who won three of their games last month.

“We didn’t want it as much as them,” rued Robins boss Rae Hughes. “We conceded two sloppy goals which is really unusual for us and our attackers didn’t take their chances, simple as that.”

“Take nothing away, though, from Stoneham, who are a good side on an incredible run.”

The tough games continues for 11th-placed Downton on Saturday when they travel to high-riding Ringwood Town (3pm).

And Hughes warned: “We must turn up on Saturday though as we face another tough game.”
