RUNNERS have been left shocked as the South West’s biggest multi-discipline sporting event has been CANCELLED.

The Sarsen Trail and Neolithic Marathon, set against the stunning backdrop of Avebury and Salisbury Plain, was set to attract hundreds of entrants from across the world in its 29th year.

A marathon, half marathon, 10k and 5k runs as well as three different cycle routes were on offer on April 30.

But with just weeks to go, organiser Wiltshire Wildlife Trust has confirmed the event is off.

An announcement on the charity’s website from Derek Gard read: “We have been informed that, due to a major military exercise on Salisbury Plain, the Trust is unable to access the Plain or Old Carter Barracks at Bulford (the finish) on 30th April, the planned date of our Sarsen Trail and Neolithic Marathon.”

“We have overcome many challenges in the 29 years of running this event but after looking at alternatives, including changing the date and route, none of these options are viable.

“We have had no alternative but to cancel the 2017 Sarsen Trail and Neolithic Marathon.

“I know many of you will be as disappointed by this cancellation, as we are. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

“All participants will be contacted within the next 14 days to arrange a refund.”

Funds raised from the event were going to support the charity’s work at Blakehill Farm to create new habitats for birds.
