SALISBURY needed another late goal to ensure they didn’t leave the Ray Mac empty handed on Boxing Day afternoon. Having twice gone behind to Winchester City in the ‘Cathedral Derby’, a 95th minute equaliser from Wayne Robinson secured the hosts a point on Tuesday.
This was despite Winchester spending the final 35 minutes of the game with only ten men.
It is the 11th league goal Salisbury have scored in the 85th minute or later so far this season, and the third for Robinson, who also scored a 95th minute winner at home against Hayes and Yeading back in November.
Salisbury will be disappointed not to have won the game, having won all of their last nine league home games. Winchester took the lead just before half-time when two former Salisbury players combined - Tommy Wright following up to score after Devon Arnold’s initial shot was blocked.
It didn’t take long for Salisbury to level the scores after the break - the hosts were awarded a penalty after just five minutes, which captain Sido Jombati stepped up and converted.
Just moments later the Winchester goalkeeper Luke Cairney was shown a red card after a ‘shoulder to shoulder’ challenge outside the box.
Stuart Mott replaced Devon Arnold and went in goal, and shortly afterwards Mott made an excellent save following a free kick to keep Winchester level. However with 13 minutes left Trevor Caborn gave Winchester the lead.
By this time Simba Mlambo had replaced Tommy Wright and Winchester make their third and final substitution when Barron replaces Dan Jones.
There was minutes of added on time and in the first of these Caborn sets up Max Smith whose effort was saved by Gould, but four minutes later Wayne Robinson scored to give Salisbury a point.
The Whites are experiencing a slight dip in form after a fantastic start to the season, having won just one of their previous four games - drawing one and losing the other two.
They are still second in the Southern League Premier South though, two points behind league leaders Chesham, and one point above third placed Gosport Borough, who have a game in hand.
On Saturday (December 30), Salisbury travel to Basingstoke Town for a 3pm kick-off, before hosting Tiverton Town at home on Saturday, January 6 (also 3pm).
