A RECORD full field of 800 runners will take to the road on Sunday to contest City of Salisbury running club’s flagship ten mile race.

This is the biggest number to have taken part in the Woodford Valley race, which was listed by magazine Men’s Running as one of the top events to take part in, and includes around 350 for the ladies’ event, itself a record.

Part of the Hampshire Road Race League, the race features runners from a wide range of clubs from across the south, striving for success in this year’s championship.

Men’s team honours were won by the Salisbury club for the past two years but a spate of injuries has dented their title hopes.

The same misfortune has blighted the Salisbury ladies’ team who are eighth in their league compared with second last year.

The course record held by Winchester AC’s Toby Lambert stands at 49min 37sec and that could fall on the day if conditions are good.

The race starts at 10.30am by the running track at Five Rivers Leisure Centre from where the race passes through Stratford-sub- Castle, over the bridge at Upper Woodford then returns to finish with a lap of the running track.

At the England Athletics age group indoor track championships in Sheffield, Jay Domoney did well in the under 17s 800m to come second in his heat but was beaten for speed in the final which was won in a new record time of 1min 51.6sec.

In the under 20s 400m, 17 year-old Jake Ness made it through to the final only to be drawn in the inside lane from where in a disjointed race he finished sixth.
