CITY of Salisbury’s Ben Brewster led his club to an excellent second place in the Southern Athletics League fixture at Portsmouth when he won the 3000m in a new personal best time of 8min 58sec.

He was well supported by novice Ben Stott’s 10.08.

Brewster further enhanced Salisbury’s standing by clinching second spot in the 1500m with 4min 15.5sec, echoed by Josh Shuter taking the B race in 4.23.1.

Darren Clissold had a crack at several different events and his best of the day was winning the pole vault with 3.0m, followed by learner Jack Paget’s 2.4m. Paget also won the shot put with 10.94m and Dave Woolcott, in the veteran 60 age group, won the B event with 9.41m.

Richard Holt again proved unbeatable in both the long jump and triple jump with 6.52m and 12.45m wins, then joined the winning 4x400m relay squad of Jay Domoney, Rhys Gadd and Alex James to clock a fine 3min 38.8sec.

In the women’s event, Georgina Henry did well in the throws and Alex Mundell took wins in the 3,000m in 11min 18.2sec, the 1500m steeplechase in 6min 17.3sec despite a fall at the water-jump and then, with Meg Price, Alice Smith and Sophie Scarr came a good second in her solid relay team, the 4x400m.

At Marlborough, in the ‘Quad Kids’ series for budding young athletes, Blake Newman won the under 9s, Lottie Miller took bronze in the under 11s and Greg Herring silver in the under 13s.

Salisbury won team bronze in all three categories.

Further north in the Edinburgh marathon saw Clive Smith brave wind and rain to clock a creditable 3hours 20mins 58sec and consistent Kate Mansfield in the half finished well with a notable time of 1.45.18.
