SALISBURY high-jumper Lucy-Jane Matthews followed up success in the Wiltshire athletic awards by leaping to a record-breaking jump in the County Schools Championships.

The 12-year-old scooped the Young Female Athlete of the Year award before clinching the minor girls classification at the championship the next day with a jump of 1.52m.

Elsewhere three of City of Salisbury’s track and field coaches and team managers had to unexpectedly stand in for their young charges when a low turnout left the club with a depleted side to contest a Southern League fixture at Wimbledon AC.

The reduced squad of 14 produced some great performances but were unable to prevent Salisbury from coming an unusual last on the day.

Karen Mundell, Martin Phillips and Alan Munro were the senior trio who helped create an outstanding team spirit among those present.

Alex Mundell competed in a staggering nine events, winning the 3000m in a personal best (pb) 11min 2.1sec and taking second place in the 1500m and 400m hurdles.

Multi-event specialist Darren Clissold competed in eight events, scoring highly in pole vault, hammer, steeplechase and hurdles. Ben Stott made a successful debut in the 5000m.
